In celebration of Leon Wyczółkowski’s painting “Highlander/Country Girl in a Yellow Scarf” being found, the Wawel Royal Castle Museum has recently opened an exhibition dedicated to Wyczółkowski’s oeuvre. It’s open Tuesday-Sunday until August 18th, 2022.
In 2020, “Highlander” was found on the art market in Poland. It was recognized and retrieved by the workers of the Cultural Heritage Abroad and War Losses department of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. This sparked an idea of making a display of artworks lost during wars and the process of finding them, with a special section dedicated to Wyczółkowski’s works and Cracovian motifs in them.
Leon Wyczółkowski (1852-1936) was one of the leading artists of modernism in Poland. He painted mostly genre scenes in realistic and impressionist styles. He often painted the Wawel Castle, its interior and the scenery around it. The exhibition includes both paintings and sketches and will be accompanied by different lectures. On May 19th at 6 pm, there will be a lecture “The Comeback of War Loss, or About the Connection Between Wyczółkowski and Piniński with Wawel”. Leon Piniński was an art collector and expert who owned a few of Wyczółkowski’s works. On July 28th at noon there will be art games for families, and a day later at 3:30 pm – a lecture about the motifs of the Wawel Castle and Cracow in general in Leon Wyczółkowski’s paintings.
The exhibition is open every day except Mondays. From May 13th until June 30th it’s open from 9:30 am to 5 pm, and from July 1st to August 18th from 9:30 am to 7 pm. The tickets cost 10pln for adults and 5pln with a discount.
