An Act of Sabotage on the Polish Railway. How Are the Germans Reacting? A Stunning Statement from the Chancellor

The leads concerning the railway sabotage in Poland point to Russia, but there is one country that is holding back from issuing clear assessments. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that it is still “too early” for that.

Between 15 and 17 November, acts of sabotage occurred on the Warsaw – Dorohusk railway line. In the town of Mika (Mazowieckie Voivodeship, Garwolin County), the explosion of an improvised device destroyed a railway track. Elsewhere, near the Gołąb railway station (Puławy County, Lubelskie Voivodeship), a train carrying 475 passengers had to brake suddenly due to damage to around 60 metres of overhead line equipment.

There is no doubt that the attacks were carried out by Ukrainian citizens acting on behalf of Russia. One of them had already been convicted for sabotage. Despite this, they escaped from Poland through a border crossing opened two months ago by the current authorities.

On Monday, the prosecutor’s office launched an investigation into acts of sabotage of a terrorist nature committed on behalf of a foreign intelligence service. On Tuesday, an extraordinary meeting of the government security committee was held, attended by military commanders, heads of the security services, and a representative of the president.

Although the Russian lead in the case has already been confirmed, the authorities of one European country remain extremely restrained in assessing the situation. That country is, of course, Germany.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on Tuesday that it is too early for a final assessment regarding the act of railway sabotage in Poland. He noted at the same time that it is possible the suspicions concerning the Russian lead will be confirmed. Merz, quoted by the ANSA agency, said in Berlin: “It is too early to issue a final assessment.”

“But it is possible that the suspicion regarding the Russian lead will be confirmed”, the chancellor responded when asked about the Russian trail in the sabotage operation.
