“This resolution is a bit like a glass of compote. If we pour even a small spoonful of vinegar into it, the compote will no longer be drinkable. That’s why today we will vote against the resolution,” says Michał Dworczyk, MEP from PiS, in a video published on X, explaining why PiS will once again vote “against” in the European Parliament today.
Brussels is reaching out its hand…
As a reminder, on March 12, the European Parliament passed a resolution on strengthening the EU’s defense capabilities. At the time, politicians from Law and Justice (PiS) and Confederation voted “against.” Right-wing Polish politicians argued that the EP resolution posed a significant threat to Poland’s sovereignty—particularly in deciding matters of national defense.
Despite this, politicians from Donald Tusk’s camp attempted to spin the narrative, suggesting that the Polish right wing “was against the Eastern Shield.”

A few weeks later—today—the European Parliament is set to adopt a report on the common security and defense policy. PiS MEPs have already announced that they will again vote “no.” Why? Michał Dworczyk explained:
“The report contains many genuinely good provisions. It clearly identifies the greatest threat to the EU—the Russian Federation. It calls on member states to build their military capabilities and even includes some warm words about NATO. So why will we vote against it? Because there are proposals in this document that we cannot agree to. These are harmful ideas that, if implemented, would weaken our country’s sovereignty and negatively impact Poland’s security and defense potential.”
He then examined the provisions harmful to Polish interests. First, he pointed to a fragment calling for abandoning unanimity and moving to majority voting on security and defense matters.
“This is a very dangerous proposal. NATO, despite being more diverse, has respected this principle since its inception. Even though the United States is the hegemon—the one with the military power to wage real war—it respects unanimity. So why does the EU want to abandon it?” Dworczyk questioned.
Brussels Wants a NATO Copy?
Moreover, Point 9 of the resolution states: “The EP welcomes the fact that the President of the EC has set the goal of entering a new era of European defense and security by building a true European Defense Union.”
“This means creating an alternative to NATO. It’s the illusion that the European Union can defend its members. Ladies and gentlemen, the EU has no forces or means to defend itself. In the latest survey on readiness to defend one’s homeland, only 11% of Germans said they would be willing to defend their own country. Do you think such people would defend their allies? No. The only alliance that can guarantee our security is NATO. That’s why we should not take actions that weaken NATO.”
