On Tuesday, May 27, a fire broke out at the grave of the late Łukasz Litewka at the cemetery on Zuzanna Street in Sosnowiec. Candles and wreaths left by visitors at the burial site caught fire.
The incident was confirmed by junior brigadier Tomasz Dejnak, spokesperson for the Municipal Commander of the State Fire Service in Sosnowiec. Firefighters received the report at 11:34 a.m.
As he explained, the fire was quickly extinguished and did not require a major operation. Preliminary findings indicate that the most likely cause was a wreath left too close to a burning grave candle.
“The wreaths placed near the grave, as well as the candles, caught fire. Most likely, one of the visitors placed a wreath too close to a burning candle,” the firefighter told the newspaper Fakt.
The fire did not spread further, but the heat and smoke caused soot damage to neighboring tombstones. The site has already been cleaned up.
