The Polish Embassy in Athens, in collaboration with the School of Philosophy at the University of Athens, hosted a seminar on December 4th to honor the centenary of Zbigniew Herbert, one of Poland’s greatest poets and essayists. The event began with opening remarks by Chargé d’affaires Wojciech Ponikiewski and Dean Dimitrios Drosis, setting the tone for an enriching literary celebration.
A Legacy in Polish Literature
Professor Tatiana Borisova, Head of Slavic Studies, expressed gratitude for the Embassy’s contributions to promoting Polish language and literature at the University. Since 2013, Polish language courses and literature classes have become an integral part of the curriculum. Dr. Anastasia Chatzigiannidi, who moderated the seminar, presented a concise biography of Herbert, emphasizing his cultural and historical significance.
Insights into Herbert’s Poetry and Prose
Renowned Greek poet and translator Haris Vlavianos delivered an engaging lecture on Herbert’s poetry, highlighting his mastery in weaving historical themes with contemporary reflections. Justyna Słowik and Beata Żółkiewicz explored his essays, further illuminating his intellectual depth. Attendees were treated to readings of Herbert’s works in Greek, alongside an archival recording of the poet himself.
An accompanying exhibition on Herbert’s life and legacy, curated by the Polish Embassy, opened in the School’s library and will run until the end of 2024. Recognized as a pivotal literary event, the seminar reinforced plans for future collaborations between the Embassy and the University
