This year marks the 80th anniversary of the establishment of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS) in Lublin, Poland. The university plans a year-long celebration with a culmination in October, featuring the formal inauguration of the academic year and hosting the Conference of Rectors of Polish Universities.
UMCS, founded in 1944, has evolved over the years, boasting four initial faculties in medicine, natural sciences, agriculture, and veterinary medicine. The celebratory events include an international congress titled “Innovation is Female,” the conferral of an honorary doctorate to Prof. Małgorzata Witko, and a session honoring Prof. Krzysztof Pomian on his 90th birthday.
Artistic highlights include a musical-literary spectacle, “Elements of Life,” and concerts by the Polish Radio Chamber Orchestra “Amadeus” and the duo Henryk and Dorota Miśkiewicz. The festivities will conclude with a jubilee alumni reunion in early October.
UMCS, with its rich history and continuous growth, has shaped the academic landscape and produced over 267,000 graduates. The current student body of approximately 16,000 across nearly 90 disciplines reflects the university’s commitment to education and innovation.
