This weekend, the Wojsławice Arboretum hosts one of the largest and most impressive hydrangea exhibitions in Europe. Just a short drive from Wrocław, visitors can admire hundreds of unique hydrangea varieties, showcasing a dazzling array of colors and forms. This collection, in full bloom, represents the largest and most spectacular display of hydrangeas in Poland.
A Diverse Collection of Hydrangeas
Hydrangeas are an incredibly diverse group of plants, with flowers ranging in color from pink to blue to orange. According to Małgorzata Gębalar from the arboretum, some species thrive in dry conditions, while others prefer high humidity. The variety extends to their foliage as well, with some hydrangeas featuring leaves that resemble those of oak trees.
The name “hydrangea” originates from the beautiful garden shrub that adorns many gardens. Paweł Nowaczek of the Wojsławice Arboretum explains that the name was inspired by a Japanese woman named Hortense, the fiancée of French botanist Philibert Commerson, who introduced the shrub to Europe.
