Egg Prices Expected to Rise Due to Decrease in Hen Population

Egg prices are set to rise due to the lowest hen population in years and changing market dynamics.

    Decline in Hen Population

Egg wholesale prices are slowly rising, with a larger increase anticipated as the hen population reaches its lowest level in years. The Polish Chamber of Poultry and Feed Producers highlights a similar situation in 2022, where prices spiked by 75% over three months.

    Market Factors

This year, the production of chicks is the lowest in eight years, with only 19 million hens entering the market. This drop is due to regulatory instability, bird flu fears, and a shift towards non-cage farming.

Experts predict wholesale price hikes will translate to higher retail costs, affecting consumers. Egg exports have also dropped, and forecasts suggest the price of medium-sized eggs could reach 48 zł per 100 eggs by late 2024.

The sector faces challenges such as bird flu and supply fluctuations. Analysts warn that strong price reductions are unlikely soon.
