A request has been filed seeking the extradition of former Polish Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro from the United States. The politician has been staying in the U.S. since May this year.
Former Justice Minister and Prosecutor General Zbigniew Ziobro has been charged by the prosecution service overseen by Waldemar Żurek in an investigation into alleged irregularities involving the Justice Fund.
In February, a district court approved his pre-trial detention, after which a nationwide arrest warrant was issued for the politician.
The prosecution also applied for a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) for Ziobro. However, the Warsaw Regional Court refused to issue the warrant in July this year.
Before the court approved his detention, Ziobro had been staying in Hungary, where he was granted international protection by the government of Viktor Orbán.
On May 10, Ziobro announced that he was in the United States. He stated that he had not fled Poland and was traveling using a document issued to him together with the right to asylum, which he had received in Hungary.
At that time, Waldemar Żurek had already announced that the prosecution would seek Ziobro’s extradition from the United States.
