First Snow of the Season Covers Tatra Peaks

On Sunday, the Tatra Mountains experienced their first snowfall of the autumn season. Kasprowy Wierch is now coated in a one-centimeter layer of fresh snow, with temperatures on the peak dropping to -2°C, according to the Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW). The freezing temperatures and snowfalls have significantly worsened conditions for hikers. High-altitude expeditions now require winter equipment, including crampons and ice axes, as well as proper cold-weather clothing.

    Challenging Visibility and High Winds

Snowfall begins above 1,600 meters, and visibility has been heavily reduced due to low cloud cover, making navigation more difficult. Strong winds, gusting up to 130 km/h, amplify the cold, adding another layer of danger to hiking conditions.

Despite the current harsh conditions, a break in the weather is expected on Monday, with sunshine forecasted over the Tatra range. The snow-covered peaks should be visible from Zakopane, offering picturesque views for visitors.
