Massive Loss of Bee Colonies
The flood particularly affected the Kłodzko Valley, where significant damage to beekeeping infrastructure occurred. Before the disaster, these four regions housed approximately 430,000 bee colonies, about 18% of Poland’s total. Experts estimate that around 25% of the colonies may have been destroyed, severely affecting pollination and the local honey industry.
The damage extends beyond bee populations. Key honey plants, such as rapeseed and acacia, were destroyed by flooding, which could lead to reduced honey harvests in 2024. Beekeepers fear the impact of waterlogged soils and dying crops on both the bees’ health and their food sources.
Financial Strain on Beekeepers
Over 7,000 beekeepers have been affected, facing overwhelming costs to rebuild. With average beekeeping expenses already high, the additional financial burden is pushing the industry to seek more funds for recovery.
