Germany’s Border Control Decision Sparks Concerns for Neighboring Poland

Germany’s recent decision to reintroduce temporary border checks on all its land borders from September 16 has raised concerns among neighboring countries, particularly Poland. The move, announced by Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, is seen as part of efforts to manage illegal migration following the adoption of the European Union’s Migration Pact. However, the decision has triggered strong reactions across Europe, with Poland voicing alarm over the potential consequences.

During a press briefing, former Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Przydacz warned that Germany’s actions could lead to an influx of migrants into Poland. “Migrants will enter Poland, whether from the east or other directions, and they will remain here. This could lead to an increase in migrants in Poland, even though the country is not responsible for these migrant flows,” Przydacz stated.

The decision has also sparked criticism from Paweł Szefernaker, a former Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, who noted that Germany’s choice to tighten border controls contradicts the principles of the Schengen Area, which allows for free movement within much of Europe. He argued that Germany’s move would leave its neighbors, including Poland, to deal with the challenges of migration.

Szefernaker also called on the Polish government to issue a clear statement regarding the legal status of migrants who are not allowed to enter Germany. He emphasized that the situation highlighted the flaws in European border policy and underscored the pressure that Poland could face in managing migrant inflows.
