The Gdańsk University of Technology (GUT) has opened a modern Competence Center STOS, which is centered around the supercomputer Kraken. This is one of the most advanced IT centers in Central and Eastern Europe, equipped with seven specialized server rooms. The supercomputer can work both as a standalone unit and as a team of several separate supercomputers, allowing for advanced research and complex simulations.

Thanks to its computing power, Kraken will enable researchers to work in areas such as the development of artificial intelligence algorithms, nuclear energy, environmental protection, medicine, and pharmaceuticals.

With its growing capabilities, the entire complex has been designed so that its capabilities can be gradually expanded in the coming years. Residents also participated in a competition for the name of the new PG supercomputer, with Kraken being the winner.

“I am proud that it is in Pomerania, at the Gdańsk University of Technology, that science, innovation, and economy have come together in such a modern way. STOS is a place with an unusual intensity of modern technologies and future science.”, said Dariusz Drelich, Pomeranian Voivode.

“GUT is a university that not only educates highly qualified staff, but also the best tools for science, business, and economy. I am pleased to see another university project that will significantly increase the position of the university, its rank, and competitiveness.”, he added.

The opening of the STOS PG (Smart and Transdisciplinary Knowledge Services) center and the launch of the Kraken supercomputer will provide the necessary infrastructure for the scientific development of Gdańsk University of Technology and attract an even larger number of young and talented people. This will significantly increase the competitiveness and attractiveness of the entire Pomerania region.
