French Retail Giant Carrefour Announces Group Layoffs in Poland

Carrefour has announced plans to implement collective dismissals that could affect up to 340 employees across its operations in Warsaw and Bydgoszcz. The move comes as the French retail giant seeks to adapt to the pressures of a challenging food distribution market and rising operational costs.

In a filing made in late January with the Warsaw District Labor Office, Carrefour Polska declared its intention to carry out these layoffs. The company has also initiated consultations with trade unions regarding the planned job cuts, with discussions set to conclude by February 18, 2025.

According to PortalKujawski.pl, the official notice was submitted on January 29, 2025, indicating that the restructuring aims to optimize operational efficiency by reducing salary expenses. The decision reflects broader efforts by Carrefour to adjust its business model amid a dynamic and competitive market environment.

Financial reports reveal that Carrefour’s Polish operations experienced a 3.2 percent decline in revenues following the third quarter of 2024. This downturn has been accompanied by a gradual reduction in workforce numbers; at the end of 2023, Carrefour employed 9,935 people in Poland, down from 10,886 in 2022. The company has not yet disclosed figures for the previous year.
