Hit-and-Run Suspect Extradited to Poland to Face Charges

A 37-year-old man, who fled Poland after causing a fatal car accident in Łódź in 2020, has been extradited from France to face charges. The Łódź prosecutor’s office is set to formally charge and interrogate the suspect in the coming days.

The suspect was apprehended in Paris on April 27, after evading capture for over four years. He had been the subject of a European Arrest Warrant and an Interpol Red Notice. The French authorities handed him over to Poland last Friday, and he is currently held in a Warsaw prison awaiting transfer to Łódź.

According to Krzysztof Kopania, the spokesperson for the Łódź District Prosecutor’s Office, the suspect will be charged with causing a deadly traffic accident that resulted in the deaths of two passengers and severe injury to a third. The accident occurred on February 23, 2020, when the suspect, driving a BMW on Broniewskiego Street, significantly exceeded the speed limit, lost control of the vehicle, and crashed into a tree.

The victims, aged 30 and 26, were passengers in the BMW. A 29-year-old passenger was seriously injured and hospitalized. The driver fled the scene and subsequently left Poland. An arrest warrant was issued by the Łódź Widzew District Prosecutor’s Office, followed by the European Arrest Warrant and Interpol Red Notice in September 2023.

International cooperation led to the suspect’s capture in Paris, where he was found with two forged identity documents. He now faces up to 12 years in prison if convicted.
