    Hollywood stars of Polish descent: Scarlett Johansson

    Scarlett Johansson, one of the world’s most recognizable and beloved actresses, has Polish roots. The Hollywood starlet who is making waves in the entertainment industry is of Polish descent on her mother’s side.

    Johansson was born in New York City in 1984. She has been acting since she was a child, appearing in numerous off-Broadway productions and television shows. She made her big-screen debut in 1994 in the movie North. Since then, she has gone on to become one of the most recognizable faces in the film.

    Johansson’s long list of credits includes numerous award-winning films. She has won a Golden Globe for her performance in Lost in Translation and has been nominated for an Oscar for her role in Her. Johansson has also starred in several Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, most notably as the Black Widow in Avengers: Endgame

    Johansson has also embraced her Polish culture in her work. She has starred in several Polish films, including Lost in Translation (2003) and The Island (2005). She has also spoken Polish in films such as The Other Boleyn Girl (2008) and The Avengers (2012). 

    On the PBS program Finding Your Roots actress Scarlett Johansson was moved to tears when she discovered the fate of her maternal grandfather’s brother, Mosze Szlamberg, and his children. Johansson had never heard the story before, but the program shared information from a Page of Testimony, which confirmed that Szlamberg and his family had met their deaths in the Warsaw Ghetto. (yadvashem.org)

    Johansson has also taken part in a number of charitable initiatives in Poland, including her participation in the launch of a charity program “Polish Mother’s Heart” in 2013. Through this program, she was able to provide financial support to mothers of disabled children and help them build better lives for their families.
