Hołownia as Acting President? KO’s Wawrykiewicz Presents Absurd Scenario

Some representatives of the December 13 coalition continue to question the outcome of Poland’s presidential election. This time, Michał Wawrykiewicz, a Koalicja Obywatelska (Civic Coalition, KO) MEP and one of the initiators of the “Free Courts” campaign, sparked controversy with his recent remarks. The politician asserted that the Supreme Court chamber responsible for the current coalition’s authority to govern cannot decide on the validity of the citizens’ choice this time.

“The Chamber of Extraordinary Control and Public Affairs is not a court. Until the validity of the election is confirmed, the National Assembly should not convene. But this is my stance as a lawyer, a defender of the rule of law for many years, and currently a KO MEP,” Wawrykiewicz said on air with the soon-to-be-closed TVP.

When confronted with the scenario that, after Andrzej Duda leaves the Presidential Palace, Szymon Hołownia could temporarily assume presidential duties, Wawrykiewicz responded, “Constitutionally, such a scenario is possible, but I wouldn’t get ahead of myself, as politically and legally, we’re still very far from this situation.”

Shortly after the election results were announced, KO politicians began questioning their validity. Roman Giertych has emerged as the most vocal advocate for recounting votes, despite statements by Ryszard Kalisz, a member of the National Electoral Commission, indicating that the irregularities cited by Giertych are minor.

Karol Nawrocki defeated Rafał Trzaskowski by over 369,000 votes. Nawrocki received his election certificate from the National Electoral Commission on June 11. His inauguration is scheduled for August 7.
