The Katowice branch of Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) has launched a unique initiative to commemorate Silesian uprising fighters with “To You, Poland” grave markers. As of today, 120 graves have received these special porcelain banners, crafted in the likeness of early 20th-century insurgent flags. The initiative began on July 5, 2021, marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the Third Silesian Uprising.
A Community Tribute
Families, local authorities, and community representatives come together in ceremonies marking these grave sites. The graves of Silesian heroes, including Wojciech Korfanty, have been honored with plaques that read “Veteran of the Fight for Poland’s Freedom and Independence.” This symbolic gesture recognizes the contributions of Korfanty and others who championed Poland’s sovereignty during turbulent times.
Wojciech Korfanty (1873–1939), a leader in the Polish national movement in Upper Silesia, advocated for Polish unification and opposed Germanization. As a parliamentary leader and journalist, he became a significant figure, particularly in the 1921 Silesian Uprising, which he led as dictator.
