Hungary to adopt the Euro? Magyar moves to meet EU expectations

Ursula von der Leyen is delighted. Péter Magyar wants Hungary to abandon its national currency and join the eurozone. This, writes Ewa Zajączkowska-Hernik, is precisely why a change of power in Hungary was so important for the European Commission. She adds that, thanks to concessions on key issues, Magyar will be able to pursue policies similar to those of Viktor Orbán in many areas without difficulty.

“The elimination of national currencies and the increasing dependence of member states on EU financial institutions is one of von der Leyen’s strategic objectives. Recently, despite protests and political turmoil, the euro was pushed through in Bulgaria; now, Hungary is next. After that, only five countries would remain outside the common currency: the Czech Republic, Denmark, Romania, Sweden, and Poland. Yet, as she argues, some still fail to understand why these elections were so crucial in the context of expanding the power of EU bureaucrats and advancing the federalization of the European Union,”

MEP Ewa Zajączkowska-Hernik wrote.

At the same time, she emphasizes that Magyar will be able to follow policies similar to Orbán’s in many areas, policies for which Orbán was criticized by EU officials and faced the blocking of EU funds.

“Hungary’s new prime minister has already announced that he will purchase raw materials from Russia and engage in trade talks with Vladimir Putin, and the European Commission has not uttered a word. He has declared an even stricter migration policy than Orbán’s; again, silence from Brussels. He has also stated that he will oppose a fast-track accession of Ukraine to the EU, just as Orbán did, and this does not seem to trouble von der Leyen. Brussels has not suddenly become blind or deaf; rather, it is securing support in strategically crucial matters that will deepen EU federalization and limit the sovereignty of member states,”

MEP noticed.

She concluded firmly:

“That is why next year’s elections in Poland are so extraordinarily important; either the Brussels-aligned, German-backed option led by Donald Tusk prevails, making “everything easier” here as well, or society mobilizes and stands on the side of Polish sovereignty.”
