Together with a second perpetrator, the man deceived a young mother by posing as a taxi driver, then abducted her to a remote location and carried out a brutal sexual assault. The second suspect – a 28-year-old Swede born into an immigrant family – is still awaiting a verdict; the case has been suspended pending a psychiatric expert opinion.
On Wednesday, the District Court in Gothenburg (Sweden) sentenced the 42-year-old man of Arab origin to five years in prison for aggravated gang rape. The verdict concerned a brutal sexual assault that occurred during the night of June 7-8, 2025. The victim – a young mother – was returning from a party in Gothenburg and waiting for transportation.
Two men pulled up beside her in a black Mercedes with tinted windows and introduced themselves as taxi drivers. The woman, who was under the influence of alcohol, got into the vehicle believing she would be taken home. During the ride, she repeatedly asked whether they were heading in the right direction – the men assured her that they were. However, the car deviated from the route, stopped briefly, and then headed toward a wooded area south of the city. According to the victim’s testimony, the perpetrators spoke to each other in a language she did not understand, and their behavior became increasingly aggressive and threatening. After stopping in a secluded location, one of them gave her an ultimatum: “one by one or both at once.” In a state of extreme fear and with no possibility of escape, the woman complied with their demands out of fear for her life and concern that she would be taken elsewhere where there might be more attackers.
The court emphasized that the victim was in a state of absolute helplessness, under the complete control of the perpetrators, who subjected her to violence and degrading treatment over an extended period. The judges ruled that the act met the criteria for aggravated rape – committed jointly and in concert by two individuals, in a secluded place, after deliberately deceiving the victim.
The convicted man has lived in Sweden since 2010 and has prior convictions for criminal threats, domestic violence, and offenses against minors. He must pay the victim 150,000 zlotys in compensation. The second perpetrator – a 28-year-old man born in Sweden to an immigrant family – was linked to the case based on forensic evidence, phone records, and the vehicle (registered in the perpetrator’s mother’s name).
In the car, police found condoms, lubricants, alcohol, and a handwritten note with misogynistic content. The man admitted to having sexual intercourse with the victim, claiming it was consensual – a version rejected by the court as inconsistent with the collected evidence. Proceedings against the second suspect have been suspended pending a psychiatric expert opinion. A final verdict in his case will be issued after the expert report is received. The case has once again sparked a wide public debate in Swedish society about brutal sexual crimes and their connection to certain immigrant communities.
