Donald Tusk said in an interview with Financial Times that Russia could attack a NATO member “in a matter of months rather than years”. After these remarks, questions emerged about what the government is doing in such a situation. More and more voices suggest this is merely a smokescreen created by Tusk to distract from current problems.
In Friday’s interview with one of the largest Western newspapers – Financial Times – Donald Tusk, head of the Polish government, questioned the “loyalty” of Poland’s key ally – the United States. At the same time, he called for “strengthening the EU’s mutual defense clause”. Tusk told the newspaper that “the biggest and most important question for Europe is whether the United States is ready to be as loyal as described in our treaties (NATO)”.
Many commentators pointed out that this is a direct attack on Polish-American relations and on Poland’s strongest ally, also within NATO.
Today on Radio ZET, Member of the European Parliament Anna Zalewska drew attention to other remarks made by Tusk in the interview with the Financial Times. The Polish prime minister stated that Russia could attack a member of the Alliance “in a matter of months rather than years”.
“If the Prime Minister of Poland says that something is going to happen in a few months, then I understand that starting Monday-Tuesday you will have a classified session of the Sejm, where the prime minister presents the scenario and all the threats. The whole world has learned about it,” Zalewska said.
On social media, she indicated that Tusk “is deliberately playing on emotions, scaring people with an attack on Poland”.
Economist Tomasz Wróblewski, head of the Warsaw Enterprise Institute, pointed out that Tusk’s interview is also an attempt to “divert attention from domestic problems”. He noted that a report by the National Bank of Poland shows significant inflationary pressure.
“Soon people will start reaching for their wallets, and there will be questions about what you have done with our money. And they will probably hear that the prime minister has more serious problems in the world – with Russia and a disloyal America,” Wróblewski assessed.
Prime Minister Tusk is warning of a Russian attack on NATO. In his opinion, such an attack could happen within a few months. “So where are the preparations of Tusk’s government to defend the Republic of Poland against Russia? If the attack is to happen within a few months, we should already be preparing intensively, and this is not visible,” asks journalist Mateusz Duch.
