Jarosław Kaczyński takes aim at Angela Merkel: “Tusk’s political Mutti accuses Poland”

Law and Justice (PiS) leader Jarosław Kaczyński has sharply criticized former German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s recent remarks. In a post published on X on Monday, October 6, 2025, the head of the United Right accused the German politician of distorting reality and attempting to blame Poland and the Baltic states for the war in Ukraine.

“The political Mutti and promoter of Tusk’s career accuses Poland and the Baltic states of contributing to the war in Ukraine because they did not seek warmer relations with Russia,” wrote Kaczyński, opening his comment with a pointed reference to the common German nickname for Merkel as the “mother of the nation” and her close ties to Donald Tusk.

Absurd argument from the former chancellor

The PiS leader’s post directly responds to an interview Angela Merkel gave to the Hungarian portal Partizan. In it, the former chancellor suggested that Poland’s and the Baltic states’ opposition to her 2021 initiative to resume direct European Union talks with Russia may have contributed to the escalation of the conflict. According to Merkel, the lack of dialogue with Moscow paved the way for full-scale Russian aggression.

Kaczyński described this line of reasoning as “an absurd argument that falsely assigns responsibility for the war to those who had long warned against Putin’s imperial ambitions.” The Law and Justice leader has for years consistently warned Western partners about the Kremlin’s neo-imperial policies, often facing misunderstanding and criticism from Europe’s political elites.

German money for Moscow

In the next part of his post, Kaczyński bitterly remarked:

“It’s a pity that even after all this time, the former chancellor cannot admit that the war in Ukraine is being financed, among other things, with German money that flowed to Moscow through the Nord Stream pipelines.

The Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 projects – pushed through by successive German governments, including Merkel’s own cabinet – were among the main sources of funding for Russia’s war machine. From the start, Poland, along with the Baltic states and Ukraine, warned that these pipelines were not economic but purely political projects aimed at making Europe dependent on Russian resources and bypassing traditional transit routes. Despite those warnings, the German government steadfastly pursued its policy, ignoring the voices coming from Central and Eastern Europe.

A question for Donald Tusk

Kaczyński concluded his post with a pointed question directed at the Polish opposition leader:

“Will Tusk choose to correct his political friend?”

The close relationship between Donald Tusk and Angela Merkel is well known. The most notable example was her firm support for Tusk’s candidacy for President of the European Council in 2014.
