Key London Talks Without Poland: What Was Decided?

The leaders of several European countries met with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in London. Poland was absent from the group – though after the meeting, Volodymyr Zelenskyy invited President Karol Nawrocki to Kyiv.

The UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, France’s President Emmanuel Macron, and Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz took part in the talks in London. Unfortunately, there was no representative from Poland at the meeting. What was agreed?

“Support for Ukraine must be increased”

During the meeting, the leaders discussed “the importance of U.S.-led peace talks for European security and expressed support for the progress made in this regard,” according to the office of the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer.

The leaders once again emphasized “the need for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, including solid security guarantees.” “While diplomatic efforts continue, Europe must support Ukraine by strengthening its ability to defend itself from the relentless attacks (by Russia), which have deprived thousands of people of heating and electricity,” the leaders appealed.

According to the statement, the discussions in London also covered positive progress on using frozen Russian state assets to support Ukraine’s reconstruction. After the meeting with President Macron, Chancellor Merz, and President Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Starmer was said to have held a phone call with other European allies. After that, together with the Ukrainian President, he delivered the latest updates.

The leaders agreed that “now is a critical moment and that we must continue to ramp up support to Ukraine and economic pressure on Putin to bring an end to this barbaric war,” the statement reads.

After his London visit, Zelenskyy went to Brussels to meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. And what about Poland? The President of Ukraine invited President Karol Nawrocki to Kyiv. He also announced that he would come to Poland if he received an invitation from the Polish President.
