On November 22, at the Powązki Cemetery in Warsaw, also known as Old Powązki (Polish: “Stare Powązki”), the mortal remains of Prof. Jan Łukasiewicz, a world-famous scientist, Minister in Ignacy Paderewski’s government, the reelected rector of the University of Warsaw, and the underground academic lecturer during German occupation, will be reburied.
The most famous achievement of Lviv-native Professor was the formulation of the principles of many-valued logic which are still used today. Łukasiewicz rebuilt Polish science as the Minister of Religious Denominations and Public Education, the rector of the University of Warsaw and the founder of the Polish Logical Association.
At the time of the Soviet occupation, the Yalta Agreement, as a result of which Poland was handed over to the Soviets and robbed of its Eastern Territories, was a sentence for all who believed that that Independent Poland would return to the world maps.
Fearing the Soviet army and arrest, Prof. Łukasiewicz decided to leave his homeland in 1944 and two years later he emigrated to Ireland. According to the information on his gravestone, he died in 1956 in Dublin, far from his beloved Lviv and Poland.
On the initiative of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, the mortal remains of Jan Łukasiewicz will be brought to Poland. It is, in a way, the fulfillment of the will of this outstanding Pole who wanted to be buried on home soil. It is also an attempt to restore his memory and a reminder of the fate of the Polish intelligentsia who refused to accept communist enslavement and went into exile and could not return.
Funeral ceremonies Prof. Jan Łukasiewicz are organized by the Armenian Foundation. The co-organizer is the University of Warsaw. The task is financed by the Chancellery of the Prime Minister.
