“One of the most admirable people with the strongest moral backbone.”
That’s how Civic Coalition (Koalicja Obywatelska) Member of the European Parliament Michał Wawrykiewicz described prosecutor Ewa Wrzosek on Tuesday. He was responding to a question about whether Wrzosek should be leading the investigation into the so-called “two towers” case. According to the politician, Wrzosek’s activities were “public, not political.” Reviewing her past posts on the X platform (formerly Twitter), one might not be surprised by such a staunch defense.
In early February this year, the Niezalezna.pl portal revealed that Prosecutor Ewa Wrzosek had been assigned to lead a new investigation into the “two towers” matter. The announcement immediately triggered a heated discussion, partly because the case is strictly political in nature—and Wrzosek openly acknowledges which side of the political spectrum she aligns with.
In recent days, Prosecutor Wrzosek has once again grabbed headlines—this time after interrogating the late Barbara Skrzypek. The prosecutor refused Skrzypek the presence of her attorney, while Skrzypek herself was supported by two lawyers representing the aggrieved party. Three days after the interrogation, Skrzypek passed away from a massive heart attack. Adding to the controversy, the record of the interrogation was not prepared by a clerk but rather… by Wrzosek herself.
Despite these developments, the prosecutor’s office sees no grounds to remove Wrzosek from the case. Its representatives also do not believe she is politically biased. Even Prime Minister Donald Tusk has spoken in her defense. And he is not the only leading politician to declare that Wrzosek is above politics.
“The Strongest Moral Backbones”
On Tuesday, Michał Wawrykiewicz—co-founder of the Free Courts (Wolne Sądy) foundation and a Civic Coalition MEP—came to Wrzosek’s defense. During an interview with RMF FM, the lawyer was asked outright whether he believes the prosecutor should be handling the “two towers” case. His response was not surprising:
“I see no reason why Ms. Ewa Wrzosek should not handle this investigation. She is a professional, very experienced prosecutor and lawyer, and I see absolutely no basis to remove her from this case or for her to recuse herself.”
The host, Piotr Salak, pointed out that Wrzosek had clearly taken a side in past disputes over Polish law. She was also involved in the Lex Super Omnia association, known for its criticism of the previous government.
“Prosecutor Ewa Wrzosek has been very actively engaged in defending the rule of law in Poland. Those prosecutors, judges, and lawyers who, over eight years of severe violations of the rule of law in Poland, have had the courage to stand up for it deserve the utmost respect. They have the strongest moral backbones,” Wawrykiewicz declared.
He also asserted that Wrzosek’s activism was “public, not political.”
“She Will Never Let Us Down”
Wawrykiewicz’s strong support for Wrzosek should come as no surprise, given their relationship. Wrzosek actively supported him during his election campaign. She herself wrote:
“I know, and I am absolutely certain, that Michał Wawrykiewicz is someone you can rely on. And that he will never let us—or Poland—down.”
And indeed, so far, he has not let her down. At least, not from Wrzosek’s perspective.
