The third edition of the Stanisław Lem European Prize (Lem Prize) has been launched, offering €100,000 to a young scientist whose research holds the potential to positively impact our civilization. The Lem Prize, established by the Wrocław University of Science and Technology in 2021, commemorates the centenary of the renowned Polish science fiction writer Stanisław Lem, who received an honorary doctorate from the university in 1981.
The inaugural recipient of the prize was Professor Randall J. Platt, an expert in genetic engineering from ETH Zurich, who leads a team working on innovative biomedical engineering technologies. In 2022, the honor went to Professor Samuel Stranks from the University of Cambridge, a specialist in optoelectronics, focusing on next-generation materials for affordable electronic devices and green energy solutions.
The Lem Prize is open to young scientists under 40 years old conducting research in the European Union and associated countries participating in the Horizon Europe program. It is awarded annually for recent discoveries or significant achievements in various fields of science and engineering, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches, creativity, and vision.
Nominations, including descriptions of discoveries and supporting publications, can be submitted until September 30th via email to lemprize@pwr.edu.pl. The laureate is selected by a jury chaired by Professor Reimund Neugebauer, President of the Fraunhofer Society.
The winner of Lem Prize 2023 will be announced on November 15th, coinciding with Wrocław University of Science and Technology’s celebration.
