Poland’s government approves a multi-year plan to build the Westerplatte and 1939 War Museum in Gdańsk, preserving national history.
The Polish Council of Ministers has adopted a multi-year program titled “Construction of the Westerplatte and 1939 War Museum – A Branch of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk” for the years 2023-2027. The program envisions the establishment of an open-air museum that will showcase the history of Westerplatte, with a particular focus on the Military Transit Depot and the 1939 Polish Campaign.
Furthermore, the program includes the revitalization of the Westerplatte Battlefield, one of the most iconic and historically significant locations associated with World War II, both in Poland and globally. This area holds immense national significance, serving as a place of remembrance for the Polish people.
Battlefields where pivotal historical events unfolded receive special attention and protection from the Polish government. Preserving the Westerplatte Battlefield aims to safeguard its unique historical, spatial, material, and immaterial values, symbolizing the heroism and sacrifice of Polish soldiers.
The planned investment activities will cover the area where parts of the former Military Transit Depot are located. The estimated scope of the investments, including the reconstruction of select historical buildings, the restoration of preserved historical structures, and the construction of an exhibition pavilion, will encompass approximately 13,000 square meters. The estimated cost of building the Westerplatte and 1939 War Museum exceeds 300 million PLN and is allocated for the years 2023-2027. The Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk is responsible for preparing and executing the investment, funded by the state budget.
