In Poland this year, 2,753 cases of Lyme disease and 47 cases of tick-borne encephalitis have been confirmed, according to the latest data from the National Institute of Public Health – National Institute of Hygiene.

Lyme disease, also known as borreliosis, is a bacterial infection spread to humans through the bite of infected ticks. The symptoms of Lyme disease can range from mild to severe and can include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash. If left untreated, Lyme disease can lead to more serious complications, such as joint pain, heart palpitations, and neurological problems.

Tick-borne encephalitis, on the other hand, is a viral infection that affects the central nervous system. The disease is also spread through the bite of infected ticks and can cause symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle pain, and fatigue. In severe cases, tick-borne encephalitis can lead to inflammation of the brain and spinal cord, which can be life-threatening.

The number of cases of Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis in Poland has been on the rise in recent years, with experts attributing the increase to factors such as climate change, changes in land use, and the expansion of tick habitats.

To reduce the risk of contracting these diseases, experts recommend taking precautions such as wearing protective clothing, using insect repellents, and checking for ticks after spending time outdoors. Early diagnosis and treatment are also crucial in preventing the progression of these diseases and minimizing their impact on health.
