Massive Damage After Floods in Silesia: Losses Continue to Rise

Flood damage in the Silesian region of Poland has been estimated at PLN 355 million, with 18 municipalities already submitting reports. Despite the significant losses, assessments continue in other areas. Authorities have already distributed PLN 20.2 million in emergency aid to those affected, including financial support from social services.

    Military Assistance

The flood response saw unprecedented collaboration among various institutions, including the Polish military. Soldiers helped reinforce levees, clear waterways, and directly assisted flood victims by removing debris and damaged property from homes. In recent days, Territorial Defense Forces have aided in cleanup efforts in the hardest-hit areas, including the Bielsko and Cieszyn counties.

In addition to the military’s involvement, the Water Authority of Gliwice has implemented a ban on public access to flood levees in the Odra River basin. Meanwhile, water authorities continue to repair riverbanks, unblock water channels, and remove flood debris across Silesia. Efforts are ongoing to clean up the Racibórz Dolny reservoir, which significantly mitigated flood damage by capturing 147 million cubic meters of water.
