Mateusz Morawiecki, Poland’s former prime minister, may soon take the helm of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR). According to recent reports from Italian media, the announcement could be made today in Rome during the Atreju conference, a key political event organized by Italy’s ruling party, Fratelli d’Italia. If confirmed, Morawiecki would receive the leadership from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Speculation about the leadership transition intensified following an article in Il Giornale, which suggested Morawiecki’s appointment might occur ahead of Donald Trump’s potential inauguration as U.S. President. When asked about his chances of becoming the ECR leader during a meeting in Rzeszów, Morawiecki gave a cryptic response: “88%.”
Polish news channel Republika is covering the event live, with program director Michał Rachoń reporting directly from Rome. In a video shared on social media, Rachoń highlighted the significance of the Atreju conference, calling it “one of the most prominent festivals in Italian politics.” He noted that today’s proceedings in the Sala Colomba could include an official announcement by Meloni regarding Morawiecki’s leadership.
The ECR party, which includes Fratelli d’Italia among its members, plays a pivotal role in uniting conservative forces across Europe. Should Morawiecki assume the leadership, it could mark a new chapter in European right-wing politics.
