National Remembrance Day Honors Poles Rescuing Jews: The Tragic Tale of the Ulma Family

On March 24th, 80 years ago, a chilling event unfolded in the quiet village of Markowa, leaving an indelible mark on history. It was a day that witnessed the valorous sacrifice of the Ulma family, who perished at the hands of Nazi soldiers for their unwavering commitment to humanity.

Józef and Wiktoria Ulma, along with their six children, paid the ultimate price for sheltering Jewish families during the horrors of World War II. Despite the grave risks posed by the occupying forces, the Ulmas defied tyranny and extended a helping hand to those in desperate need.

Tragedy Unfolds: The Betrayal and Sacrifice of the Ulma Family

Since 1942, hidden within the walls of their humble home, the Ulma family provided refuge to members of three Jewish families: the Didners, Gruenfelds, and Goldmans. Their selfless act of compassion, however, was betrayed by a local policeman, leading to a catastrophic turn of events.

In the predawn hours of March 24th, 1944, Nazi soldiers descended upon the Ulmas’ residence, unleashing a barrage of gunfire upon the unsuspecting inhabitants. Józef and Wiktoria were ruthlessly executed, their children witnessing the brutality of hatred firsthand. Shockingly, the Nazis, devoid of mercy, extended their violence to the innocent young souls, ending the lives of the Ulma children as well.

A Ray of Hope Amidst Tragedy: Defiance and Honor in Markowa

Yet, amidst the darkness of this tragedy, a flicker of humanity emerged from the depths of despair. The villagers of Markowa, defying the oppressors, pleaded for dignity in death. They implored the Nazis to honour the Ulmas and the Jewish victims by providing separate burials, a small but significant act of defiance against the atrocities of the Holocaust.

The sacrifice of the Ulma family, emblematic of the countless Polish individuals who risked everything to defy tyranny, echoes through the annals of history. Their unwavering courage and moral fortitude serve as a beacon of light in humanity’s darkest hour.

    Honouring Heroes

In recognition of their heroic deeds and in remembrance of all Poles who selflessly aided Jewish individuals during the German occupation, the National Remembrance Day of Poles Saving Jews was established in 2018. This solemn occasion serves as a poignant reminder of the power of compassion and solidarity in the face of hatred and bigotry.
