Near Miss on a Crosswalk: Police Issue a Statement on Waldemar Żurek’s Fiat 126p Ride

Police are taking up the case of a video showing dangerous driving in a Fiat 126p by Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek. In an official statement, officers point to the “possibility that an offense may have been committed.” “An analysis of the secured material is currently under way,” the Kraków Provincial Police Headquarters (KWP Kraków) reported.

Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek was a guest on the program “Duży w Maluchu” and personally drove a Fiat 126p during the interview. As he approached a pedestrian crossing, Żurek failed to notice that a pedestrian was already on the crosswalk and drove past her at close range.

“Please be careful! You almost ran over that lady,” said the interviewer seated in the passenger seat.

“Oh no, not at all—she was still far away,” Żurek replied, adding that he drives safely. However, many observers pointed out that such driving could result in 15 penalty points and a hefty fine. There were also public calls for the police to intervene. A day after the controversy erupted, the Kraków Provincial Police Headquarters finally commented.

“A recording featuring Minister Waldemar Żurek has appeared in the media. Due to the possibility that an offense may have occurred, traffic police officers from the Kraków Municipal Police Headquarters initiated ex officio explanatory proceedings in this matter. An analysis of the secured material is currently under way. If the commission of an offense is confirmed, officers will take further actions предусмотрed by law,” the Małopolska Police stated.
