On July 19th, Palace Day returns for its 9th edition, inviting people from around the globe to celebrate the rich heritage of European royal residences. This annual event, initiated by the Palace of Versailles in 2016, has become a beloved tradition, showcasing the historical and cultural significance of these magnificent sites through social media and public engagement.
This year, the theme is “Horsing Around!”—a tribute to the integral role horses and equestrian arts have played in the history of royal residences. Horses have long been symbols of power and prestige, appearing not only in royal stables but also in the art, architecture, and everyday life of palaces. From majestic paintings and sculptures to practical carriages and elaborate riding costumes, the influence of horses is woven into the fabric of royal heritage.
European Royal Residences Unite to Celebrate Palace Day 2024
The Network of European Royal Residences, which includes 32 full members from 15 countries, is spearheading this year’s event. Participating residences in Poland, such as the Royal Castle, Royal Łazienki Park, and the Palace in Wilanów, will join others across Europe in sharing the stories of their equestrian past.
From Stables to Museums: Celebrating the Evolution and Legacy of Royal Equestrian Heritage
Stables, once bustling hubs of royal activity, are now part of our architectural heritage. Some continue to house horses, while others have been repurposed into museums, restaurants, and exhibition spaces. This transformation highlights the enduring legacy of these spaces and their adaptability over time.
This year’s Palace Day is part of the broader project “Horsing Around European Courts,” developed in conjunction with the 2024 Olympic Games. The initiative aims to draw connections between the historic equestrian traditions of royal courts and the modern spirit of the Olympics.
