    History of the Sanctuary

The protection aims to preserve this special place in the Lidzbark district. The place has been valued for its historical, artistic, and scientific values as well as for its landscape and spatial qualities, the monastery complex, a valuable monument of Baroque architecture and art, preserved in the open countryside and, in more recent times, the place of internment of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński.

The sanctuary of Mary in Stoczek Klasztorny is an important object for Polish culture. The circumstances of its foundation are linked to an important moment in the history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The history of Stoczek Klasztorny will remain inseparable from the figure of the Primate of the Millennium, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński. He was imprisoned there by the communist authorities between 1952 and 1953.
