Polish archaeologists, led by Professor Janusz Czebreszuk, are making significant strides in understanding the role of amber in ancient Greece. As the Director of the Polish Archaeological Institute in Athens, Professor Czebreszuk emphasizes that amber, especially Baltic amber, was highly valued by the Mycenaeans, Greece’s earliest elite. The Institute, officially recognized in 2019 and opened in 2021, is the only Polish archaeological research center of its kind.
Amber’s Role in Mycenaean Society
Amber symbolized power and divine connection, particularly to the Sun. The Mycenaeans, who came to Greece from the north, wore amber ornaments, such as necklaces and headpieces, to assert their elite status. The discovery of amber in rich Mycenaean graves reveals its significance in social hierarchies. Poland’s contribution to this field is crucial, as Baltic amber was a central component of ancient trade networks.
