The President of the Polish Constitutional Tribunal, Bogdan Święczkowski, has publicly declared that Poland is experiencing a coup d’état. He has formally reported an act of treason allegedly orchestrated by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, key government ministers, and members of the ruling coalition. The investigation into these claims has been initiated by prosecutor Michał Ostrowski, according to Święczkowski’s statement.
Kaleta: ‘I Support the Tribunal President’s Diagnosis’
Sebastian Kaleta, former Deputy Minister of Justice, expressed his support for Święczkowski’s position in an interview with the conservative news portal Niezalezna.pl. Kaleta stated that for over a year, Poland has faced a situation where Donald Tusk and what he referred to as an “organized criminal group” have been unlawfully seizing control of state institutions. He accused them of using forceful methods to undermine the legitimacy of independent bodies such as the Constitutional Tribunal.
“This is, in fact, a forcible imposition of a system different from the one outlined in the Polish Constitution,” Kaleta remarked. “The Tribunal President’s classification of these actions as a criminal coup d’état is justified, in my opinion, and must be legally addressed.”
Concerns Over the Investigation’s Integrity
When asked whether the case might be reassigned to another prosecutor in an attempt to remove Ostrowski, Kaleta noted that Ostrowski remains the Deputy Prosecutor General, as his dismissal would require the approval of the Polish President—an approval that Justice Minister and Prosecutor General Adam Bodnar has not yet sought.
However, Kaleta highlighted the controversial nature of the takeover of the National Prosecutor’s Office, which he claims was conducted illegally. “Given this reality, Michał Ostrowski appears to be the only person legally authorized to handle such proceedings,” he asserted.
Bodnar’s Role in Question
Kaleta further implicated that Justice Minister Adam Bodnar is a co-participant in the offenses attributed to Tusk’s administration. “By law, Bodnar is automatically excluded from overseeing or conducting this investigation due to his involvement in the crime,” he said.
