Tragic new details have emerged following Saturday’s terrorist attack in central Berlin. The mayor of the German capital has confirmed that the person killed in the attack was a 65-year-old Polish woman who had been visiting the city with her daughter. A total of 29 people were injured.
The attack took place late on Saturday evening in the heart of Berlin. Driving a van, the perpetrator plowed into a crowd of people walking along a path in the popular Tiergarten park. The attack occurred in one of the city’s most prominent and sensitive locations, near the Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz.
At the time of the attack, the Berlin Pride Parade was taking place in the immediate vicinity, drawing massive crowds to the area.
The toll of the brutal attack is devastating. One woman was killed after being struck by the vehicle, while 29 others sustained injuries.
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner confirmed on Sunday that the victim was a 65-year-old Polish woman. She had been visiting Berlin together with her daughter.
Suspect Dead
The manhunt for the attacker continued without interruption from Saturday evening, mobilizing law enforcement across the city. Police were searching for 21-year-old Abdul B., who investigators identified as a supporter of the so-called Islamic State (IS).
On Sunday, Berlin broadcaster Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB) reported that the suspected attacker had been killed. According to the station, the large-scale police operation ended in an allotment garden area in the western part of the German capital, where officers allegedly fatally shot the suspect. German authorities have not yet issued an official statement confirming the broadcaster’s report.
“Another Polish Victim of Islamist Terrorism”
The news was commented on by TV Republika’s CEO, Tomasz Sakiewicz.
“This is very sad. This is another Polish victim of Islamist terrorism. During the previous attack, when a Polish truck was used, there were even attempts to frame a Pole. Now we have another Polish victim,” he said.
He added that “we live in a world where the mistakes of other countries – especially their naivety toward radical Islamists – are beginning to cost us as well.”
