Polska 2050 Meets the President – One Issue Carefully Sidestepped

“The meeting with the president was good and substantive,” assessed Bartosz Romowicz, deputy chair of the Polska 2050 parliamentary caucus. Politicians from Polska 2050 discussed with Karol Nawrocki both bills already on his desk and draft legislation currently under consideration. According to their statements, current issues concerning the struggle for leadership within the party, as well as the possible departure of Szymon Hołownia and a potential breakup of the governing coalition, were not raised during the meeting.

On Thursday, meetings between representatives of parliamentary caucuses and groups and President Karol Nawrocki were being held at the Presidential Palace. Among those who chose to meet with the president were PiS, PSL, Polska 2050, Konfederacja, Konfederacja Korony Polskiej, and the Razem group; the KO and Left caucuses declined to participate.

After 2 p.m., the president met with representatives of Polska 2050. The party was represented by two MPs: Deputy Caucus Chair Bartosz Romowicz and Caucus Secretary Kamil Wnuk.

“We presented to the president all legislative initiatives of the Polska 2050 parliamentary caucus, as one of the most active caucuses in terms of members’ bills,”

Romowicz said after the meeting.

Wnuk clarified that the discussion included, among other things, the bill on crypto-assets. Last year, the government’s draft was vetoed by the president. “At this point, the president indicated that he is rather inclined to veto this bill,” the Polska 2050 MP said.

Both representatives clearly stated that no strictly political issues were raised during the meeting.

Polska 2050. Civil war in Hołownia’s party

After the annulment of the second round of elections for the chair of Polska 2050, chaos has been mounting within the party, and the media reports increasingly sharp internal disputes and rivalry between party factions. The ongoing quarrels are fueling uncertainty about the party’s future.

Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz, one of the candidates for the new chair, proposed an unusual solution: jointly leading the party together with Paulina Hennig-Kloska. However, this proposal was rejected by the other candidate, who pointed out that the party’s statute does not provide for such an arrangement. Ultimately, the National Council decided to repeat the second round of elections, setting the date for January 31.

Hołownia has spoken out sharply in public about the situation in the party. “The election process must be restarted, because you don’t hold elections during a war, especially during a civil war, which is what we are dealing with in this party today. The other option is that I’m trying to work this out with the candidates, to lead to an agreement for them to co-chair the party,” the politician said.

He announced that “after what happens in the second round, he will decide whether this is still Szymon Hołownia’s Polska 2050 (…) or not.” When asked about the possibility of leaving the party, he admitted that he might be accompanied by “a significant group.”
