The operator of the Estlink 2 submarine power cable, which connects Finland and Estonia, has reported its disruption. The incident occurred on Wednesday around midday, sparking an investigation into potential transmission disturbances, according to Fingrid, the company managing the cable.
Arto Pahkin, a Fingrid representative, told Finland’s public broadcaster Yle that the cause of the damage remains unknown, though sabotage has not been ruled out. He also noted that the cable has experienced technical malfunctions in the past.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo addressed the situation on social media platform X, assuring the public that Finnish authorities are thoroughly investigating the incident. He confirmed that the disruption has not affected the country’s electricity supply.
Estlink 2 is the second major power link between Finland and Estonia, spanning a total of 170 km, with 145 km running beneath the Gulf of Finland. The connection was out of service from January to September this year due to a short circuit.
