President of Moldova in Warsaw: “Poland will continue to support you”

Poland has supported and will continue to support Moldova on its path toward EU membership, Polish President Andrzej Duda assured after meeting with Moldovan President Maia Sandu. President Sandu expressed her gratitude for Poland’s support, noting that with the involvement of a Polish company, Moldova has just made its first purchase of gas on the open market.

During a joint press conference following their meeting on Tuesday in Warsaw, President Duda congratulated President Sandu on the reforms being carried out in her country as part of its preparations for joining the European Union. He emphasized that Poland has consistently supported — and will continue to support — Moldova in its efforts to join the European community.

He stressed that this support continues despite extremely difficult circumstances, particularly in the context of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, which has had a significant impact on Moldova’s economy, as well as the unresolved issue of Transnistria — a separatist region of Moldova where Russian troops are stationed.

“Despite everything, there remains strong and determined support among the Moldovan people for the EU accession process, for Moldova to become part of the broader Western community. I thank Madam President for all these efforts,” said President Duda.

He also recalled that Moldova holds the status of a participating state in the Three Seas Initiative.

As he noted, his talks with the President of Moldova also touched on the war in Ukraine and the recent NATO summit in The Hague.

President Sandu emphasized that over the past 33 years, Moldova and Poland have built a relationship based on trust and solidarity, and today their cooperation is “stronger than ever.” She thanked President Duda for his warm welcome, as well as for his personal involvement and support shown to her country during his time in office.

“Your personal engagement, your voice on the international stage, and your understanding of our region have been very important for Moldova. For years, Poland has inspired us through its political and economic transformation, and today your country continues to be an example for us,” said Maia Sandu.

She also announced that on Tuesday, Moldova made its first gas purchase on the open market, and she thanked the Polish company that helped facilitate the transaction. President Sandu noted that Poland provides assistance on many fronts, helping to improve conditions for Moldovan society — including support for the development of hospitals and the education sector.

“Moldova is proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with Poland. Together, we will defend Europe and help make it stronger, more resilient, and more welcoming,” she affirmed.
