Poles were attacked and murdered by Germans, so reparations are owed by the Germans. “Against historical truth, against logic, against any values, it is wrong for a Nation that suffered persecution to then have to pay for that suffering itself,” wrote President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, on social media.
During a press conference with Friedrich Merz in Berlin, Donald Tusk said that today there are about 50,000 people who suffered during the war. As he added, when he discussed compensation in recent years with former Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the number was around 60,000 people. “Hurry up if you really want to make such a gesture,” the head of the Polish government addressed the German side.
He pointed out that if there is no quick and unequivocal declaration from Germany, next year he will consider the decision that Poland will fulfill this need from its own funds.
“I don’t want to say more about this,” he concluded. The proposal to compensate with Polish taxpayers’ money for wrongs committed by Germany shocked commentators.
“Tusk’s proposal is completely embarrassing for Poland. We should not engage in such matters,” said Dr. Eng. Col. Leonard Kapiszewski, president of the Federation of Associations of Veterans and Successors of Struggles for Polish Independence, in an interview with the portal niezalezna.pl.
