Presidential spokesman ahead of Trump-Nawrocki meeting: “This is how serious foreign policy is conducted”

President Karol Nawrocki will meet today with US President Donald Trump. The spokesman for the head of state, Rafał Leśkiewicz, spoke with TV Republika just before the presidents’ meeting. He commented, among other things, on the behavior of representatives of the ruling coalition in recent days.

Main goal – strengthening cooperation

“Above all, this is President Karol Nawrocki’s first meeting, his first visit, with Poland’s most important ally and partner, namely the President of the United States, Donald Trump,” noted the spokesman for the President of the Republic of Poland. The key will be to strengthen cooperation between Poland and the US. The gestures coming from the American side, the form of reception for the President, and the fact that this visit takes place less than a month after he took office show that President Trump takes the Polish leader very seriously. The main goal of the meeting is to tighten Polish-American relations, but also to hold concrete talks on economic and military cooperation – Leśkiewicz pointed out, adding that “the President is making his first trip, an introductory trip, getting to know President Donald Trump in a new format.”

Just before the President’s visit to the United States, the Polish government tried to reduce the head of state to the role of executor of orders by announcing so-called instructions. “How does the President take this?” asked Adrian Borecki.

“The President does his job, he is the head of state, he represents Poland on the international stage. In the Polish Constitution, the provision regarding the conduct of foreign policy states that it is the cooperation of the government and the President. This is set out in Article 133 of the Polish Constitution,” the spokesman reminded.

Leśkiewicz added that downplaying the significance of the President’s visit does not work in Poland’s favor.

Klich did not welcome the President. “Well, then…”

“President Nawrocki has the strongest mandate to represent Poland with President Donald Trump. Today we expect these talks to concern ongoing cooperation, strengthening relations that were damaged by particularly irresponsible statements of some politicians from the ruling camp. President Nawrocki has never spoken badly of President Trump; he respects him greatly. President Trump also respects President Nawrocki,” he emphasized.

The spokesman pointed out that friendly gestures between the presidents had been visible in recent months. “This is how serious and responsible foreign policy is conducted. These attacks and bites from the Polish government are not only out of place, but they also do not serve the interests of the Republic of Poland.”

The Presidential Chancellery also noted that yesterday, during Karol Nawrocki’s arrival in the US, the head of the diplomatic mission, Bogdan Klich, was absent. “Well, President Nawrocki has repeatedly stressed that Mr. Bogdan Klich does not deserve an ambassadorial nomination, which is why Mr. Klich did not welcome the President,” Leśkiewicz commented.
