Saryusz-Wolski: The “French Nuclear Umbrella” Is an Illusion That Lulls Europe Into a False Sense of Security

“Belief in what would supposedly be the extension of the so-called French nuclear umbrella to EU countries is, in reality, pure illusion, especially given that, under France’s nuclear doctrine, the decision to use nuclear weapons and to press the nuclear button is an inalienable prerogative of the President of France, a point that France itself repeatedly emphasizes,” assesses presidential adviser Jacek Saryusz-Wolski.

Jacek Saryusz-Wolski notes that this creates a false sense of security that in fact does not exist, just as there is no deterrent effect concerning Russia. “Moreover, the French nuclear doctrine is incompatible with NATO’s nuclear doctrine,” he said.

French or German fantasies that Europe could defend itself on its own, without the United States, are not only completely unfounded but also dangerous.
