Can Sikorski build Polish-American relations? “He cannot, he cannot, because his wife is involved in the political dispute in the United States. Very strongly, even radically, Sikorski’s wife, Anne Applebaum, attacks President Trump, and this negatively affects Polish-American relations,” assessed today on TV Republika Mariusz Błaszczak.
President Karol Nawrocki has recently undertaken a number of foreign initiatives. He delivered an important speech in Dallas, Texas, during the Conservative Political Action Conference conference, and earlier held talks with the authorities of Hungary, including Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Both activities were met with criticism from those currently governing Poland.
A radically different vision is presented by the head of diplomacy. The stance of Radosław Sikorski and the direction of his foreign policy were discussed today by the head of the parliamentary club of Law and Justice (PiS), Mariusz Błaszczak.
“This is undoubtedly a challenge for Polish diplomacy, for those responsible for foreign policy,” Błaszczak admitted on TV Republika when asked about changes in NATO announced by the U.S. administration (such as linking voting rights to defense spending) and what a potential division within the alliance could mean for Poland.
“Is Radosław Sikorski active in this matter? He is deputy prime minister, he is the foreign minister – can Sikorski build Polish-American relations? He cannot, he cannot, because his wife is involved in the political dispute in the United States,” he continued.
“Very strongly, even radically, Sikorski’s wife, Anne Applebaum, attacks President Trump, and this negatively affects Polish-American relations. Thanks to the very good relations at the presidential level between President Nawrocki and President Trump, the situation is not as dangerous as it could be if someone else were president […] for example Rafał Trzaskowski,” he said further.
“Today we are seeing attacks on Hungary governed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and attacks by those governing Poland. This is also extremely dangerous for relations – by weakening Poland’s ties with countries from our part of Europe, from Central Europe, those in power are in fact rebuilding an alliance dangerous for Poland, a German-Russian alliance,” he said on TV Republika.
“Poland is governed by people who harm the interests of our homeland. Sikorski should leave the government. The policy pursued by Tusk and Sikorski is harmful to Polish interests,” he concluded.
