The results of the first round of Romania’s presidential election mark a significant triumph for national movements across Central and Eastern Europe, said Polish MEP Daniel Obajtek, commenting on the exit polls that showed a clear victory for AUR leader George Simion.
Romania held the first round of its presidential election on Sunday. According to preliminary results, George Simion — leader of the conservative-nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) — emerged as the frontrunner, confirming his lead in pre-election polls. At 9 p.m., Romania’s electoral commission announced that Simion had secured 41.8% of the vote. He was followed by Crin Antonescu with 22.2%, and Nicușor Dan with 16.32%.
Simion’s strong showing has drawn congratulations from various quarters, including from Poland. Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, head of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group of which Simion is a vice-chairman, posted a message on X:
“Congratulations to George Simion, Vice President of the ECR Group, for an outstanding result in the first round of the presidential election! Wishing you success in the second round!”
Simion responded with a brief message: “See you soon in Poland.”
