Stay safe during heatwaves by drinking water with a pinch of salt to replenish electrolytes and maintain heart health.
During heatwaves, staying hydrated is crucial. Dr. Tadeusz Zębik, Head of Cardiology at Municipal Hospital No. 4 in Gliwice, emphasizes that instead of drinking plain water, we should opt for water with a pinch of salt. This simple solution replenishes electrolytes lost through sweating, helping to maintain essential bodily functions.
Electrolyte Balance and Heart Health
As the body tries to cool itself during high temperatures, it sweats, losing water and vital electrolytes like potassium. Dr. Zębik warns that significant potassium loss can lead to or exacerbate heart rhythm disorders. To prevent dehydration, it’s important to drink electrolyte-rich fluids regularly.
Avoiding Overheating
Dr. Zębik also advises avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest hours, between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM. If you must be outside, opt for early morning or evening activities. Protecting yourself from overheating is essential, as our bodies struggle to regulate temperature during extreme heat.
