Everything must be done to prevent people from dying. This is how I view the mission undertaken by U.S. President Donald Trump, said former Minister of National Defence Mariusz Błaszczak, referring to the talks on peace in Ukraine taking place on Sunday. He noted that a few days before the meeting in Florida, another important conversation had taken place.
On Sunday, Ukrainian President Wołodymyr Zelensky arrived in Florida for a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. The leaders’ discussion is expected to focus on a 20-point peace plan and security guarantees for the country attacked by Russia.
The topic of the Florida talks was addressed on the program Gość Dzisiaj broadcast on Telewizja Republika, where the guest was former defence minister Mariusz Błaszczak. The Law and Justice (PiS) politician pointed out that on Friday there had been another conversation, significant from Poland’s perspective.
“I think I am very encouraged by the fact that two days ago there was a conversation between President Karol Nawrocki and President Donald Trump. This means that the head of state of the Republic of Poland held consultations with the President of the United States on this matter [peace in Ukraine – editor’s note],”
he said.
The politician assessed that the situation in Ukraine is difficult.
“There is no point in mincing words. War, of course, brings casualties. Just in recent days, Russian bombardments have struck Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine, so everything must be done to prevent people from dying,”
he said.
“This is how I view the mission undertaken by President Trump,”
he added.
The conversation between Karol Nawrocki and Donald Trump was announced on December 26 by the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland. In its statement, the Chancellery said that the presidents “addressed the state of transatlantic relations and security in the region in connection with the ongoing war in Ukraine caused by the Russian Federation—discussing in particular the progress of peace arrangements.”
