Donald Tusk’s past criticism of Donald Trump has led to strained relations between the Polish Prime Minister and the U.S. administration. Marcin Mastalerek, Chief of the Polish President’s Cabinet, revealed that Tusk’s remarks during his election campaign resulted in the U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson refusing a meeting between Tusk and Trump during the 25th anniversary of Poland’s NATO membership. Meanwhile, President Andrzej Duda continues to maintain strong ties with Washington.
Duda’s Consistent Pro-American Policy
For the past decade, President Duda has prioritized military modernization and a strong alliance with the United States. According to Mastalerek, Duda’s approach has earned Poland a respected position in Washington, while Tusk’s previous policies—favoring rapprochement with Russia and cooperation with Germany—have isolated him from Trump’s administration. Mastalerek stated that those who failed to invest in Poland’s defense are now facing the consequences of their past decisions.
Mastalerek dismissed recent media concerns regarding potential U.S. military withdrawal from Poland. After meeting with Trump’s envoy, General Keith Kellogg, Duda reassured the public that Poland remains a key U.S. ally. The Pentagon has even suggested increasing American military presence in Poland, reinforcing its role as a model defense partner.
