Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin shortly after his hypothetical inauguration, emphasizing his intent to end the war in Ukraine as quickly as possible. Trump reiterated his campaign pledge to resolve the conflict within his first day in office, jokingly noting he would still have “half a day” to achieve it.
“I Will Meet with President Putin”
During a signing ceremony for executive orders, Trump confirmed his intention to engage directly with Putin, signaling that the first conversation would occur “soon.” He speculated that Putin might not be enthusiastic about the meeting, citing Russia’s heavy wartime losses, which Trump estimated at one million. “I think he’s destroying Russia by refusing to make a deal,” Trump remarked, adding that the country is in “serious trouble.”
Ukraine’s Stance on Peace
Trump suggested that while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is open to negotiations, it remains unclear whether Putin shares the same willingness. Trump also expressed his belief that resolving the conflict would be crucial to global stability.
Geopolitical Priorities
Beyond Ukraine, Trump discussed broader geopolitical concerns, including the U.S.’s strategic interest in Greenland for “international security needs.” He also mentioned potential tariffs, threatening 25% duties on Mexico and Canada while reiterating existing tariffs on China. Further economic measures against Beijing, he hinted, could depend on developments surrounding the Panama Canal, which Trump claimed is under Chinese influence.
