“Poland is a great country,” U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday when asked about Poland’s participation in the G20. He also pointed to the role of President Karol Nawrocki.
“Poland is a great country. We are friends with Poland. The President is doing a great job. So we invited it,”
Trump said while speaking to reporters before departing for Las Vegas.
This was in response to a question about why the United States had invited Poland to take part in G20 meetings in place of South Africa.
On Thursday in Washington, the first meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors within the G20 took place, with Poland participating as a full member. It was represented by Finance Minister Andrzej Domański and President of the National Bank of Poland Adam Glapiński.
Poland in the G20
This year, Poland is taking part in G20 meetings, both at the level of finance ministers in April and at the leaders’ summit in December. Previously, Polish ministers attended G20 meetings as special guests.
Upon assuming this year’s G20 presidency, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that “Poland, a nation that was once trapped behind the Iron Curtain but now ranks among the world’s 20 largest economies, will be joining us to assume its rightful place in the G20.”
